What is so unique about Blacking out the front bumper?

Postby Gleno » Sat Mar 12, 2011 10:17 pm

If you look at other car makes, like Toyota,Holden, Ford etc.. i dont think i have seen them offer vinyl or black out the front bumper, i certainly havent seen anyone apply it. So why the lancer??
What is it about the car that makes it look better?? Is it because we have more of a square type front compared to other makes??
How come other manufacturers dont offer this option like mistubishi do??

Is just a exclusive club cj idea?? , Or did Mitsubishi always have that option for a blackout since the birth of the CJ??
Glen :)

The front black out gives an EVO grill look -a-like.

The Lancer grills match top and bottom, so Blacking out between them give a typhoon plane look front end like the Evo and Ralliarts.

LOL... well.. if you look at other brands like VW - the grill can be a split chrome grill... but the upper models have one single chrome grill.

But anyway, makes the car look more aggressive. One simple mod to make the car look better?

Shame on all of us NA owners who enjoy a bit of Auto Styling/Modding!!!

I have looked at alot of the front bars on most makes of cars and see no place suitable to apply a bumper blackout. The one standout that would look good on the front of a CJ is the red pinstripe trim around the upper grill on the VW Golf.

The CJ has 2 vertical groves on the front bar and a rather flat and lifeless gap between the upper and lower grill. What better place to add an exterior styling mod. It just looks like something is suposed to be there.

When I did my front bumper blackout I had no intention to "try and copy" an EVOX or RA. If I wanted to copy one of these I would have added the chrome trim around the edge as well. S*&T, I probably would have got a EVOX rear spoiler as well instead of a VRX one. Perhaps I would have even got a EVOX replica body kit instead of my HOS kit that looks NOTHING like an EVO!!!

I did it becuase I liked the look which was suited to my HOS front lip.
Without the vinyl blackout applied, the blank area that it went on looked out of place and boring.

Mmmmmm - That's an idea.... I've been photoshopping the front edges of the grill lattice in a red, to see how it would be...

From having a black CJ, I want to do something with this area - Just trying to work out a suitable colour... White would be too full on, but the grey is coming back to me.... Would liek to also match it with some rear vinyl either a boot protector or a trim of some sort...

Just to answer this part of it. Mitsubishi only began to offer the option last year? Before that, it was a club thing (not just ClubCJ, but a number of clubs).

Well here is My "Signature Red Stripe" which I applied 2 1/2yrs ago when I bought my Aspire.

Notice, I also fitted the OEM Sports Upper Grille (Grey) and removed the Chrome Lower Grill Mesh. (substituted for VRX Black)

As Luke mentioned, I too liked and was inspired by the red grille stripe on the VW Golfs.
