As many of you know, this cycling is ridiculous and keeps changing.
The website mymotormouth used to do the monitoring but now they seem to have stopped.

The ACCC also does this and you can find their charts here.

Here's the day's for the last week

City Cheapest day (week ending 1/5/2011)

Sydney Wednesday

Melbourne Wednesday

Brisbane Monday

Adelaide Tuesday

Perth Wednesday

For Melbournians, here was our graphing:

From Jan 2011 to now, we've moved through Mon -> Fri. It was Fri for awhile and if you don't monitor, you end up paying at the peak for NOW Fri is the most expensive.

For all other states, you can find your own graphings here:

Brisbane
Sydney
Adelaide
Perth

Good luck beating the bowser people!

Not all stations raise or lower their prices on the same day as well. Local Woolies/Caltex has cheaper petrol for a day longer than other stations.

To be honest I don't think the cycles are that predictable anymore, well not in Sydney at least.

What I don't get is why do they follow a cycle. The only logical reason to me is they want to use up as much of their petrol reserves before the fuel tanker comes out to refill and hence the cost of transport would be spread over more petrol (if they managed to use up as much as possible in their reserves)... but that shouldn't be the same for all retailers?

Therefore my economics studies kicks in and it most probably is purely competition driven. There may be lots of competition selling a homogeneous product, but all servos essentially are price takers.

I use this
http://motormouth.com.au/pricesearch.aspx?Region=Sydney
and this
http://www.mynrma.com.au/motoring/car-c ... prices.htm

to gauge what the prices are like. I always have a 10L jerry can sitting in my garage. Always useful when you happen to run out of fuel when you're 2 or 3 days out from tight ass fuel day and prices are a good 12c/L above their low. lol

It seems that lately, cheap fuel days are jumbled from one to another. Maybe they're making it less predictable so people don't always tend to buy petrol/diesel when it's least expensive.

Indeed they have been, it was Friday the week before, last week it was Saturday, i'm guessing it will jump to Monday judging from this evening's fuel price of $156.9 for ULP95 - I gave it a quirt of 10L to get me thru tmrw....

I keep a watch on NRMA's website (Sydney at least)

Yeah the past few months have been jumbled. For those in the Ipswich region it came down a cent this morning and I'm assuming from the way the store I work has been the past week it looks like its continue to come down a cent or two or stay as it is for the weekend. Its hard to tell it use to come down cheap on the weekend and then Sunday morning jump up 11 cents but it seemed to change last week. Even I can't tell any more for sure its crazy.

What I can't work out is, many years ago and I'm talking in the 80's and early 90's there didn't seem to be a cycle back then. Petrol was around 55 cents a litre however it would only flucuate between 1-2 cents. Why there is a cycle now is beyond me. Last night I filled up 98 fuel for $1.58
