Gearing down and 1st gear problems.....

Postby denzza » Fri Jan 25, 2013 4:04 pm

Just today I was driving my car normally.
I was in 3rd gear doing about 60-70km/h and I down shifted into 2nd and my gears grinded:/
At first I thought I didn't press the clutch in all the way. But I tested it again at the same speed and it grinds... Anything under 40km/h it's normal..

Then going to Mccas drive through.. It didnt want to pop into 1st gear:/ let te clutch out and pressed it in again.. It didnt want to click it to 1st..
So I took off in 2nd.
But only sometimes it doesn't go into 1st.

I'm not sure if it's my gear box, clutch or short shifter playing up:/?
Was good to me for 3 years..

Any ideas?

I wouldn't think you'd have gearbox issues in such a new car, but if you consider shifting into 2nd at 70km/h normal driving, who knows?

I'd take out your short shifter and make sure its all seated properly as a first step.

Nah I never take off in 2nd..

But also my car got serviced 3 days ago and they said everything is fine?

Yeah your right, it should showing signs of slipping but nothing. The friction point is the same. Just when I'm down shifting to 2nd:/
Nah not down shifting into 2nd 70km/h
Maybe 50 and it puts me at 3-4k revs..

Gear box is under warranty correct?

You're either doing it wrong, or something is damaged (may or may not be from doing it wrong) or you need new transmission fluid (though it probably should've had a swap not too long ago? Not sure what the interval is).

I HIGHLY doubt it'd be the short shifter unless you have some ebay one, and even then... The only way I could see it being the short shifter, considering its only an occasional problem, is if the shaft section below the pivot is too short, not giving it enough throw.

Yeah I'm the first owner..
I'm going to call my local dealer and get them to check it out.
I'm going to wait till Monday cause apparently this problem can come and go. But I doubt it.

LOL I doubt I'm doing anything wrong. Been driving the same for 3 years..
Service should have checked the gearbox fluid.
But I actually think it's the short shifter causing it like you said the pivot or the throw.. Ill take it apart tomorrow.
I got the torque solutions short shifter.

I have a similar issue..

Shift in to first at below 30km/h and it'll go fine
Shift in to second from 3rd, no issues

If I put it in first while at a stand still, it pops out of gear and then grinds.

I think it might actually be the selectors on the gear box itself. I'll drop the trans fluid and take the sump off over the weekend to check it out. From memory the gap should be 34mm, but sometimes they need to be "re-gapped" like spark plugs. If the gap is wrong, it'll cause an issue like this.

I'll post here with what I find out.

Yeah please tell me what happens and if it fixes the issue. I have to take it to Mitsubishi. The cars under warranty so I might as well use it.
Gear biz is pretty hard to mess up unless your doing reverse donuts lol which I've never done lol

But I have a feeling it's the shifter:(

Put your OEM gear stick back in and give it a try.Short shifters are very hard on transmissions.the faster shifting will cause premature wear in the transmission

Yeah I want to put the OEM shifter back in but I don't have spare rings that hold the shifter plastic thingy in:/

That's what I'm thinking, the short shifter is harsh in it!
