Window tint with privacy glass?

Postby Lancer1993 » Sat Feb 07, 2015 6:53 pm

Just wondering what others have done.

I was told that with the privacy glass rear windows on my VRX that I only need tint on the front but I might have to go for darker to make it match. The upside is doing just the front windows it will cost me just $85 with a guy I trust.

But I remember the dealers (who was trying to sell their tint and protection package) said the privacy glass is not a UV barrier so still needs tint or a clear UV coating.

Just wandering what others have done as I don't want to get it too dark and be illegal? I was told I may need 20% on the front to match better but 35% is the legal limit here in QLD.

I was thinking of going with the light tint on front windows (lighter than the privacy glass) and clear UV on the back to help protect the interior.

i`ve had no sun damage through the rear privacy glass but my car is normally garaged so doesnt get much sun so i cant really judge whether putting a clear film over them would make any difference but i think not :)

as for the front i put 20% on and even that isnt as dark as the rear, arguably because they are beside the windscreen so they have a lot of ambient light.

I got the lease company to organise tinting on mine before I got it, not sure what they did but they matched it up pretty well, the back glass is pretty much solid black, can't see inside much at all, even when standing right next to it. Pretty sure most competent tinters could match them up.

35% wont match it and i dont imagine a lease company would put more than that on making it illegal.

Yes they can match it with 20%, just wondering what are the chances I'd get pulled over for them being too dark on the front.

Maybe the best bet is do the front, for just $85 and see how it looks. Get clear UV on the back later if needed?

that sounds like a plan :)
the chances of being pulled over for too dark a front tint are minimal, so far after 3 years i havent.

Your dealer is wrong. All glass in Lancers have uv protection, so you don't need to tint the rear privacy glass. 20% on the front matches but is illegal and you will need to open front windows to reverse at night especially in difficult locations.
Worth it in my opinion as it looks terrible if it doesn't match.

Plead ignorance, say its what the tint guy installed.

So they have some UV protection already, tint and weather shields are next on my list so the sooner I get them on the more livable the car will be.

Do most tint places have a light meter to check the darkness?

I thought that this was regulated in the ADR's and that it was Australia wide?
You know that you have really got to someone when they invest personal time into tracking you down all over the internet.

Watching The Checkout (ABC) last week and they said non tinted windows already block about 97% of UVB and 37% of UVA radiation, so maybe it's not needed after all to protect the interior.

Again it depends how much time the car is parked (or driven) in the full summer sun.
