Code No. P0014: Exhaust Variable Valve Timing System

FUNCTION

The engine-ECU controls the spool valve position of the exhaust oil feeder control valve corresponding to the driving condition of the engine and continuously changes the phase of the exhaust camshaft.
The phase angle of the exhaust camshaft is computed from the signal patterns of the crank angle sensor and exhaust camshaft position sensor.

TROUBLE JUDGMENT

Check Conditions

More than 20 seconds have passed since the engine starting sequence was completed.
Engine speed is more than 1,188 r/min.
Engine coolant temperature is more than 76°C.

Judgment Criterion

Difference between exhaust valve close timing and target exhaust valve close timing is more than 10°CA for 25 seconds.

PROBABLE CAUSES

Failed exhaust oil feeder control valve
Damage in exhaust oil feeder control valve circuit or loose connector contact
Failed exhaust timing sprocket operation
Clogged oil passage
Failed exhaust camshaft
Failed engine-ECU

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III data list

Refer to Data List Reference Table .

Item 39: V.V.T. phase angle (exhaust)

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ).

	Go to Step 2 .

STEP 2. Check exhaust oil feeder control valve itself.

Check exhaust oil feeder control valve itself (Refer to ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Go to Step 3 .

	Replace the exhaust oil feeder control valve.

STEP 3. Connector check: B-17 exhaust oil feeder control valve connector and B-08 engine-ECU connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Go to Step 4 .

	Repair or replace the connector.

STEP 4. Check harness between B-17 (terminal No. 1) exhaust oil feeder control valve connector and B-08 (terminal No. 17) engine-ECU connector.

Check output line for damage.

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Go to Step 5 .

	Repair the damaged harness wire.

STEP 5. Connector check: A-33X engine control relay connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Go to Step 6 .

	Repair or replace the connector.

STEP 6. Check harness between A-33X (terminal No. 2) engine control relay connector and B-17 (terminal No. 2) exhaust oil feeder control valve connector.

Before checking harness, check intermediate connector A-11, and repair if necessary.

Check power supply line for damage.

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Go to Step 7 .

	Repair the damaged harness wire.

STEP 7. Check oil feeder control valve filter for clogging.

If oil feeder control valve filter is broken, check oil passage for clogging, and eliminate if necessary.

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Go to Step 8 .

	Replace the oil feeder control valve filter.

STEP 8. Check exhaust camshaft sensing portion.

Q. Is the check result normal?

	Go to Step 9 .

	Replace the exhaust camshaft.

STEP 9. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code

Reconfirmation of diagnosis code.

Q. Is diagnosis code set?

	Replace the engine-ECU.
