They are considered a fog light. The copper would have been referring to DRLs (Daytime Running Lights), they are normally a thin strip of leds that automatically turn on when the headlights are off.
It is "against the law" to have fog lights turned when there are NO adverse weather conditions.

Please change the title of the thread as it is misleading as the fog lights installed are not illegal but if used incorrectly they are considered illegal(same goes for any fog light).

You will get fined if you have your fog lights on when there is no fog I've been warned before

As other have mentioned...they are considered fog lights and are illegal to use except during adverse weather conditions.

I have white globes in my fogs & I use them driving to work in the darkness " Dark roads NO street lights " I find these help me see the sides of the road better ! I have passed many Police cars & yet haven.t had a problem .... BUT I have seen marked police cars with their white fog lights on ! Can someone pls explain why Police can have them on & not our cars :?:

police are above the law, and its up to the cop what they think is unroadworthy, because technically they are a driving light like on the falcodores, but in a cops eye they are an external light therefore a fog light, therefore fining u, to make their quota on something legal :D

Same rule as we cant use a mobile phone while driving but the cops and emergency services can! I remember reading an article where someone took a pic of a cop using a mobile phone and....here is the article

You see so many people driving with them on all the time I guess it just depends on if a cop feels like pulling someone over for having them on. Now when they say adverse weather conditions does that mean rain, sprinkling, how much fog. I guess that comes down to the discretion of the cop as well.

I had a friend who got fined real money, not just a 'warning'. It was circa $300; so if the fine is now $110, that's a bargain!

Seriously - this is my pet hate. It's especially prevalent with the growing crowd of soft roaders (pretend 4WDs, small SUVs, whatever you call them). It's not foggy, turn off those friggin' fog lights!!

But if you want to push your luck with the law, and drive around with fog lights on like the cool kids do, it could conceivable be argued that anything other than clear bright sunny day constitutes 'adverse weather' conditions, and which it would be legal to have fog lights on. Cloudy/overcast weather - document it well, take the fine to court, and make your case with the magistrate. I will personally take a day off from work and support you.*

* I'm not a lawyer, this is not legal advise. Don't listen to my post.

But the sentiment is duly noted. I wonder if in the very smoky conditions this morning you could argue a case.

Easy - don't join the bogan crowd and keep 'em off unless the weather conditions actually require them.

Remember also if you go to court to argue your case and you lose then you are liable for court costs + the fine + any extra fine a judge or magistrate sees fit.

Just leave them off - they are not cool
