Floor Lights

Postby Lancer1993 » Thu Jan 22, 2015 6:57 pm

Okay had a bit of a look but couldn't find an answer so...

I know you can get front floor light kits which are plug in a play but they cost a lot more than the LED strips you can get on eBay.

1) How easy are they to hook up?
2) How much harder are the cheap LED strips to get working?
3) How do they work, IE when do they come on/off?

Pictures or links to other who have done DYIs on this would be helpful.

So from what I've read you can just wire them to the fuse box.

Some of the links are missing photos, do the genuine ones have proper mounting points in the foot well?

Would say they would have proper mounting clips\points etc being that they're OEM and all, I have them in my RA, but I ordered the car with them, so don't know how they're mounted etc. If it was me, I'd save the trouble of mucking around with soldering\splicing and what not and just buy the OEM kit from a dealer or ebay.

Not that hard to search, took me all of 2 minutes to find those links and more. Little leg work goes a long way, others aren't here to spoon feed...

According to the instructions I've seen, the factory light kit has a harness that plugs into the fuse box. (It's more of a 'Y' cable that allows an existing cable to be plugged into the back of it. Sort of like a double adaptor.)

As for mounting the lights, you need to cut a rectangular hole into the trim panel that's in the footwell, and two round holes for the mounting screws.

The part I'm not looking forward to is pulling all the panels and trim off the dash.

I still want to do this, anyone else installed the Mitsy ones that cost about $180 on eBay?

I checked the workshop manual but couldn't find any details on how to do it apart from what was posted here.

I picked up a set of OEM foot-well lights from Gumtree a few months back and installed them without too much trouble.

The only thing they did not come with was the template for where to cut the holes in the footwell plastic thing.

So there is cutting, was hoping it was a simple matter of popping out a panel or something.

Car is due for a service soon and I have a few things I need to ask them so might add this to the list. Not that I'd get the dealer to fit or supply them. $180 on eBay, hate to think what they would charge.

The OEM ones require cutting and drilling if I recall correctly but they give you a template to trace. You don't have to be too accurate s the lights sit over the top and cover it.
